Just a weekend away

Je vous emmène avec moi, dans les winelands, pour un week-end chargé en couleurs, en collaboration avec The Entertainer App. Pour celles et ceux qui ne connaissent pas, c’est une application qui propose de supers offres « buy one, get one free ». Cela coûte R400 / 30€ par année et permet de découvrir pleins d’endroits aux alentours de Cape Town.

Nous avons pris la route depuis Cape Town vendredi soir, et sommes arrivés dans l’hôtel le plus accueillant et chaleureux, le Wedgeview Hotel. Après nous avoir fait découvert notre magnifique chambre (qui avait un sol chauffant, le lit le plus confortable, et DEUX douches), notre hôtesse nous a proposé de manger un petit quelque chose. Autant dire que le plateau de fromage, la soupe au potiron et la bouteille de rouge tombaient à pic après une longue semaine. L’hôtel a un joli menu allant de plateaux variés, aux sandwiches gourmants, passant par des mets plus raffinés. Un petit coin de paradis, aux toits de chaume, entouré de vignobles et d’un jardin multicolore.

Samedi a commencé avec une odeur de café et de croissant venant du restaurant en bas de notre chambre. Comme je me suis réveillée trop tôt pour le déjeuner (servis entre 8 et 10 heures), je me suis promenée dans l’enceinte de l’hôtel. J’y ai découvert une belle piscine, adjacente à un bar. La terrasse est située entre un étang et le restaurant, parfait pour les belles journées ensoleillées. Le déjeuner ne nous a pas déçus : fromages, charcuterie et croissant pour l’un, fruits frais, muesli, et omelette pour l’autre, nous avons mangé à notre faim. Après s’être rempli la panse, nous sommes partis en direction de Stellenbosch, pour notre première wine tasting.

We started our journey by driving from Cape Town on Friday evening, to a very homely and cosy hotel, the Wedgeview Hotel. After taking us to our room (which has a heated floor, the most comfortable bed, and TWO showers), our hostess suggested that we eat a little something. Let me tell you that the cheese platter, the butternut soup, and the bottle of wine sounded like exactly what we needed after a long week. The restaurant of the hotel has a nice small menu going from different platters and gourmet sandwiches, to more sophisticated meals. A little place of paradise, made of thatched roofs, vineyards and a multicolour garden.

Saturday started with a delicious smell of coffee and croissant coming from the kitchen downstairs. As I woke up too early for breakfast (served from 8 to 10 am), I walked around. I discovered a beautiful swimming pool, next to a bar. The terrace is situated between a pond and the restaurant, perfect for a lovely sunny day. The breakfast did not disappointed us: cheese, cold meat and croissant for one, fruits, muesli and omelette for the other, we stuffed ourselves with a lot of delicious food. After eating one last piece of papaya, we left direction Stellenbosch, for our first wine tasting.

Il faut savoir que Stellenbosch est l’emblème des winelands. Ville universitaire, je vous conseille vraiment d’y faire un tour. Nous avons commencé notre journée découvertes par la wine farm « Fleur du Cap ». La vendeuse nous a accueilli avec un grand sourire, nous prévenant que la visite guidée du domaine commençait à 10 heures. Mais comme nous avions une offre Entertainer pour une wine tasting seulement, nous avons dégusté six vins plutôt pas mal. J’en suis même ressortie avec une bouteille de Merlot au goût de crumble aux fruits rouges.

Ensuite, nous avons pris la magnifique route des vins, qui va de Stellenbosch à Franschhoek, une ancienne ville huguenote aux allures de Provence. Là, nous sommes allés à « Plaisir de Merle » qui se trouve être une wine farm pittoresque entourée de végétation. Nous avons profité de l’offre « wine and fudge pairing » mélangeant les saveurs sucrées du caramel aux notes plus sombres du vin rouge. C’était une expérience très enrichissante car le caramel fait ressortir le bouquet caché du vin.

You probably already know that Stellenbosch is the emblem of the winelands. University town, I really recommend you to pop there for a day. We started our day trip at the winefarm “Fleur du Cap”. The waitress welcomed us with a huge smile, telling us that the guided tour only started at 10am . However, as we had an Entertainer voucher for a normal wine tasting, we tried six pretty good wines. I even ended up buying a bottle of their Merlot, which tasted like a berry crumble.

Then, we drove on the beautiful wine route that goes from Stellenbosch to Franschhoek, an ancient Huguenot town similar to Provence in France. From there, we went to “Plaisir de Merle”, a picturesque wine farm surrounded by the vegetation. We enjoyed the deal “wine and fudge pairing” mixing the sweet savours of the fudges and the darker aromas of the red wines. It was a very enriching experience as the fudge brings up the hidden bouquet of the wine.

Histoire de laisser reposer nos papilles, nous sommes allées nous balader à « Babylonstoren ». Connu pour ses jardins de fruits et de légumes, cet endroit offre parallèlement des wine tastings de qualités ainsi que deux restaurants. Pourtant, nous avons fait que de nous promener entre les plantations de choux, les cactus, et les arbres qui commençaient à fleurir.

Lorsque la faim s’est fait sentir, nous avons repris la route en direction de « Boschendal ». Encore une autre wine farm de caractère avec ses chênes et ses jardins. L’Entertainer n’offrait pas de bons pour cet endroit, mais nous avons quand même testé leurs vins qui étaient, je dois dire, décevants. Par contre, le menu est excitant, fait de différentes quiches et salades gourmandes.

Quand la journée touchait à sa fin, nous sommes rentrés à Wedgeview pour nous y reposer, lire un peu et faire la sieste. Le soir, nous sommes sortis à Stellenbosch pour un verre. Je recommande vivement d’y aller le soir car tous les étudiants sortent, et l’ambiance est électrique.

Finalement, après une bonne nuit de sommeil, un réveil aux croissants, et un bon petit-déjeuner, nous avons encore fait usage des services de l’hôtel ainsi qu’une offre de l’Entertainer pour profiter de deux heures de soins dans leur spa. Puis avons repris la route pour rentrer aux bercails.

Because our taste buds needed some rest, we went for a walk in “Babylonstoren“. Known for its gardens full of fruits and veggies, the place also offers a delicious wine tasting and two restaurants. However, we just wandered around between the cabbages, the cactus and the bloomy trees.

When we started to feel hungry, we drove to “Boschendal”, another magical wine farm nested in between its oaks and its gardens. The Entertainer does not offer a deal for this area, but we were still tempted to try their wines which, I must say, are actually disappointing. However, their menu is exciting, made of different homemade quiches and salads.

 

When the day came to an end, we came back to Wedgeview to get some rest, read a bit et have a nap. In the evening, we went out in Stellenbosch for a drink. I highly recommend to go there at night as all the students go out and the ambience is electric.

Finally, after sleeping in, the smell of the croissant and a delicious breakfast, we enjoyed one last deal from the Entertainer. Part of the hotel’s services, we could get a spa treatment, where we spent two hours being pampered with a full body massage and a facial. Then we drove back home, rested, happy, and with a lot of wine bottles in the boot.
